Welcome to Portland, Maine
Portland is the largest city in Maine and has a rich history as the center of trading and fishing since colonization by the British in 1632. As industry began to flourish, Portland’s waterfront became a hub for shipping and trading companies. Since the city has had the misfortune of being burned to the ground four times, Portland’s symbol, the Phoenix, embodies the grit and spirit of its inhabitants.
Renewed interest in exporting, the prominent fishing industry, and the redevelopment of Portland’s working waterfront have revitalized Maine’s largest metropolitan center. Portland has successfully incorporated the character of the past into a modern urban environment thanks to its continual attention to landmark preservation.
The Westin Harborview is ideally situated just steps from a lively shopping district with cobblestone streets, boutiques, and restaurants. For more information, visit the Greater Portland Maine travel site (www.visitportland.com).
