Postdoctoral Scholar - Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
Deadline May 1, 2022
We are seeking a talented postdoctoral scholar who is an outstanding scientist and has a passion for diversifying science. This postdoctoral scholar will become part of a mentoring team with The Diversity Project (https://tdp.eeb.ucla.edu/), a transformative research-intensive undergraduate program that has been diversifying marine science for nearly two decades. Working with Dr. Paul Barber and Dr. Peggy Fong from the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UCLA, the successful applicant will work with a diverse group of graduate and undergraduate students conducting marine ecology/conservation research on the coral reefs of Moorea, French Polynesia. TDP employs a unique student-centered research model, where students design and implement their own research projects. The postdoctoral scholar will help mentor students through the entire scientific process from project development to data collection, analysis and publication of research results. The successful applicant will work full time with students for 10 weeks during the summer, and then continue mentoring students through the writing process during the school year, serving as anchor author on TDP student authored publications. Although student mentoring is a key aspect of this position, the postdoctoral scholar will have a substantial amount of time during the academic year to pursue their own first-authored research so that they can continue to develop their research programs. This position is initially for one year with the option (and funding) to extend to two years by mutual consent. The starting salary range is $54,540 - $56,712.

The primary responsibilities will be experimental design, budget management, data collection, management and analysis, ecological model development, technical report, and manuscript writing as well as providing oversight of complicated applied science projects in support of district priorities, leading and interacting on high-level scientific teams, both internally and externally.

Project management duties may require management of other staff members as necessary to achieve project completion in a timely manner. This candidate will also provide oversight and mentoring to junior staff that perform field sampling of water quality and key ecological parameters used to guide management of freshwater flow into the estuaries. The ability to clearly communicate estuarine science to multiple audiences including stakeholders, agency personnel and the District’s management team and governing board is required.

Position may be filled at the Senior Scientist level.

Employment Guidelines
